In 2024 and 2025, Cultural Heritage without Borders (CHwB), in collaboration with the Maidan Museum in Kyiv, will train Ukrainians working to safeguard and promote Ukraine’s cultural heritage. The project aims to enhance the documentation of war crimes, contribute to Ukraine’s reconstruction, and increase the understanding of cultural heritage as a tool for post-conflict peacebuilding and reconciliation.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, hundreds of cultural environments in Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed, and it will cost Ukraine many billions to rebuild them.
In light of this, and with support from the Swedish Institute (SI), the CHwB foundations in Sweden, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Kosovo began a collaboration with the Maidan Museum in Kyiv in 2023 to safeguard and rebuild Ukraine’s cultural heritage. Now, we have received support from SI to develop this work further in 2024 and 2025.
During this period, we will train and strengthen the capacity of Ukrainian individuals who are working to safeguard and promote Ukraine’s cultural heritage. The training will cover documentation of cultural heritage war crimes, which in the long term could lead to the ICC recognizing them as war crimes, as well as the reconstruction of cultural heritage, based on methods and experiences from the reconstruction in the Balkans.
In the long run, we hope that the project will contribute to the understanding of cultural heritage as a human right and a tool for building peace and reconciliation after a conflict. We also want the restoration of cultural heritage to be included in the plans for rebuilding Ukraine.
Throughout the project’s duration, we will continuously update information about our activities and Ukraine’s cultural heritage on our website.
